What is a tracksuit? Tracksuit, jogging suit and training suit explained

A tracksuit is a set of top and trousers in the same fabric and usually in the same colour. Tracksuit, jogging suit, training suit: the three words often get used for the same thing, but they are not quite identical. Here you will read what is behind each term and how to spot a good tracksuit.

What does tracksuit mean?

The word is English: "track" is the running track, "suit" is the suit. Originally the tracksuit was what athletes wore over their sportswear before and after a competition. Today it is mostly a streetwear piece for everyday life.

Tracksuit, jogging suit, training suit: the difference.

Term Fabric Made for
Training suit usually a smooth synthetic fabric, often with a zip jacket sport and training
Jogging suit sweat fabric in cotton or a cotton blend free time, at home, outside
Tracksuit umbrella term from English in streetwear, usually a hoodie and sweatpants as a set

In everyday life the lines blur. When someone in Germany says "tracksuit", they usually mean a jogging suit in sweat fabric.

How do you spot a good tracksuit?
