With jeans, the wash decides how a pair looks before you even think about the cut. Star Denim has one cut, the Regular Open Leg Fit, and comes in 6 washes. Here you can compare all the jeans washes side by side: light, black, brown and raw.
Every pair shares the same details: an embossed logo on the back pocket, 5 Lucid Club logo buttons and a logo patch on the back waistband. What changes is the colour and how the fabric was treated.
Washed, Raw, Basic: the three families.
- Washed: The fabric was washed after sewing. That makes the colour softer and uneven, as with Sahara Sky, Phantom Black and Smoked Mocha.
- Raw: Unwashed denim. The colour is deep and even, and the seams stand out light against it. These are Raw Blue and Raw Black.
- Basic: A calm, solid look without distressing. For us that is Basic Black in 100 % cotton.
Sahara Sky: the lightest wash.
Star Denim Sahara Sky is light blue with sandy patches and light distressing at the hem. It costs €79.99. If you only want one pair of jeans for summer, this is the obvious pick: it goes with white, grey and cream.
Phantom Black: black, but washed.
Star Denim Phantom Black is a washed black pair of jeans, also with light distressing at the hem, for €79.99. The black is deliberately not deep: it leans grey, and the texture of the fabric stays visible. If you want black jeans that look worn in rather than formal, this is the one.
Raw Blue and Raw Black: dark, with light seams.
Star Denim Raw Blue is a blue raw denim with light seams, Star Denim Raw Black a black raw denim with white seams. Both cost €84.99. Raw denim needs different care from washed jeans: it is not made for the washing machine, we recommend hand washing, and before the first wear it can rub off slightly onto light fabrics.
What raw denim is exactly and how to wear it is in our guide Raw denim explained.
Smoked Mocha: the brown jeans.
Star Denim Smoked Mocha is a brown pair of jeans with a sand coloured wash and 5 belt loops, for €84.99. Brown is the wash that stands out most, and at the same time the one that looks calmest with earth tones: cream, beige, white.
A note from the reviews: one says that after 2 washes the jeans were "light grey and not as brownish anymore". Washed colours change, especially in warm water. How to keep the colour longer is in How to wash jeans.
Basic Black: the calm option.
Star Denim Basic Black is black, without distressing, in 100 % cotton, for €84.99. If Phantom Black looks too worn in for you, Basic Black is the alternative.
Wash and outfit.
The lighter the jeans, the more they carry the outfit. Sahara Sky needs little: a white tee, a grey hoodie, done. Raw Blue and Basic Black, on the other hand, are the calm base where a print or a colour on top sets the tone.
Phantom Black and Smoked Mocha sit in between. Both have enough texture of their own that a plain hoodie is all you need. You will find five concrete looks in How to style wide leg jeans.
